Pashmina Shawl Techniques

Pashmina shawl techniques are limited due to the fiber's fragility. Mostly the products are hand crafted using traditional labor. Industrial production is also used.

Jacquard Looms / Computerized

Using this old technique, now computerized, intricate patterns can be automatically woven on cashmere pashmina fabrics. Jacquard used punched cards for this, and this idea became the precursor of modern computers. Babbage wanted a machine that could weave intricate patterns of arithmetic, just like Jacquard’s loom. Now that is where 'multi-threading' came from!

Dobby/Plain Loom technique

This is another technique for making patterns.

Handlooms

The pashmina fiber is so soft and fragile, only handlooms are used to make the pure pashmina fabric.

Embroidery

The traditional hand crafted variety. A lot of human labor and patience goes to make just one pashmina fabric. And skilled craftsmen are in shortage. Hence the higher prices.

Prints

Prints look good on scarves and throws. Block prints are one popular variety.

A typical pashmina manufacturing unit employs the following type of personnel:
